Heart-ATTACK

Stanford's fullback rushes into the endzone to put them up 24-3 with 8:30 left in the 4th quarter. UCLA did not look like the 7-0 team that they were coming into the game. My brother grumbled something worriesome about our chances. I replied that 21 points in 8:30 was definately do-able. I don't know if we could, given how we've played all night but we have the potential and I know that the team never gives up. I admit, it didn't look good however.

Perhaps Stanford should have been happy with 17-3 and not pushed the issue because something happened to the UCLA offense and defense after Stanford's last touchdown. Suddenly there was a fire in their eyes and a crispness to their play, on both sides of the ball. As if they were startled awake and realized they were losing. Doing what they could not do for the first 3 and a half quarters Drew Olson and company moved the ball down the field and into the endzone in 1:30. Score: 24-10. On Stanford's next possession, they only managed to run 30 seconds off the clock. Another 1:30 later, another UCLA touchdown. At that point, the team was unstoppable. Stanford was playing on their heels and reeling from blow after blow.

Drew Olson threw a pair of beautiful floaters to the corner of the endzone (1 was in OT). UCLA's offense racked up over 200 yards in the 4th quarter. That's heart, they just refused to give up.

I actually had to clutch my chest during that 4th quarter, I felt my heart pause. But the last minutes of the game was nothing but pure joy and energy. God I love college football and I love UCLA! Go Bruins!!

Cars and Women

No wonder cars are given women's names. Between the two of them, it's a wonder that a guys have a need for banks at all. Before we can even have the experience of having the reassuring weight of a few hard earned dollars in our overworked hands, it zips out of our futile grasps on its way to those that demand it.

Today this bit of wisdom and cynicism stems from the stern and necessarily heeded demands of my car. I give and give, and yet it only keeps demanding more. Orders come loudly and sharply. They cannot even be considered requests due to the pointedness with which they rend flesh from bones. Obedience is compulsory and gratification must come absolutely and instantly. Like an insatiable mistress it knows I cannot in good sense refuse her demands for fear of her wrath and the reprecussions. So like the broken shell of a man I am, I heed her and feed her, continuously shoveling my small fortunes into her fiery, wonderous, elegant maw.

The good news from this weekend is that my UCLA Bruins are 7-0. We finally had a game where we played from ahead. The come-from-behind 4th quarter heroics, while dramatic was certainly taxing on my poor heart. More intriguing about this past Saturday's game was that the Oregon State quarterback is a transfer from UCLA. Matt Moore competed for the Bruins starting QB job but ultimately lost to Drew Olson and then he decided to transfer to OSU. Matt Moore played a good game, but it was clear that he hasn't quite the poise and leadership that Drew Olson has. Matt did hit his best reciever, Hass for 199 yards though. But the only numbers that matters are 51 and 28 which is what the final score was once the day was over. Drew Olson threw a UCLA record 6 touchdowns and an amazing 11 touchdowns in back to back games. 5 from the game before and 6 in this past contest. The 5 TD performance gave him a shared record with the Cade McNown, his 6 versus OSU gives him the record outright. Oh and Maurice Drew had a typical great game as well. Rushing, recieving, punt returning. The man is a beast.

Okay, so I guess the title was a bit misleading. There are no women in this post. To make mention of a woman, I'll volunteer that in my opinion the most desireable woman in the world today is Charlize Theron.

A return to the norm

Happy Monday, we are now back on our regularly scheduled programming. Well, that is if anything about this blog can be considered regular or scheduled. It has been a crazy, crazy weekend if you follow college sports. I confess I really did not know what outcome I wanted from the USC-Notre Dame game. On one hand, I always root against USC on principle and on the other hand, I'd prefer for Pac-10 to win non-conference play and for the UCLA-USC game at the end of the year to be between two undefeated teams. So I suppose you can say, either way the game turned out, I would be satisfied with it.

What a game it was though, down the the last seconds. If I was Notre Dame, I would be upset at the officiating at the end of the game but the game shouldn't have been in the referee's hands in the first place if they had played their defense. What can you say? USC delivered in the clutch. They're on top of the polls for good reason. I don't believe they are invincible though, and to get to the Rose Bowl this year, they still have to go through us.

Speaking of the *other* games this weekend, UCLA is going to end me someday with our terrible run defense. I understand that 3 starting defensive linemen are out with injuries, but can we please learn to tackle? I prefer to not start every half spotting the other team 21 points and having to dig ourselves out of it in the last 2 quarters. That said, we did a remarkable job of it. Drew Olson was calm and poised as he led the team down the field drive after drive. Maurice Drew was impeccable as the go-to guy and Marcedes Lewis exploited his mismatch well. All around a good showing by the offense.

Oh, and Berkeley lost again. I suppose losing to us last week could have rattled their confidence, but I think more likely is that they're not as good as everyone thought. The best team they had played was UCLA and they haven't beaten anyone good. I think they've been exposed as a one dimensional offense, since they are weak at the quarterback position.

Outside of the sports world (and back into mine,) there isn't a whole lot to talk about. I've been watching a lot more TV than I did last year/season. I find the shows 'How I met your mother', 'My name is Earl', and 'Everybody Hates Chris', and 'Smallville' to be entertaining enough to keep my interest. 'My name is Earl' is probably the best among them. I'm waiting for 'Scrubs' to start its new season, I can't wait to find out what's going to happen now that Elliot is gone. I hope they don't cancel the show, I simply can't get enough of it.

Go Bruins!!

So yes, it's another non-monday post. This goodness simply couldn't wait for monday though:

(10) California Golden Bears vs (20) UCLA Bruins
Final Score: California 40 UCLA 47
From ESPN.com:
Pre game analysis:
So No. 20 UCLA (4-0) plays No. 10 Cal (5-0) in a game that will establish the highest hurdle that No. 1 USC must leap on its way to the Pac-10 championship. UCLA has proven it can win with the run or the pass. Cal has proven, well, what? The Golden Bears have played one I-AA team and four I-A teams that among them have a total of three wins over I-A opponents. Cal has proven that it knows how to schedule a 5-0 start.

Post game analysis:
It was over when...
Maurice Drew stepped on the field. Drew scored five TDs -- three on the ground, one in the air and one on a punt return. He scored the winning TD with 1:35 to play.
Gameball goes to...
Drew, who finished with 279 total yards -- 162 on three punt returns, 65 on 15 carries and 52 on two receptions.
Stat of the game
12:
Cal's regular-season 12-game winning streak ended. The Bears also lost their shot at their best start since 1950, when they began the season 9-0.

What a wild ride of a game. Maurice Drew is a monster. To quote a friend: "He didn't just have highlight reel plays, the whole game was a highlight reel for him."

But, our defense left a lot to be desired. There were some good series in the game where california was held to just a field goal, but just looking at the final numbers, you can see on defense, we were simply run over. That's got to change.

Coach Dorrell needs to keep the team focused now on each coming week's game. It is very possible for us to be 9-0 when we meet Arizona State (and maybe 10-0 when we meet USC).

Aberrant!

A new post on a Tuesday? The end of the world must be nigh. Well, maybe not so dramatic as that, but it is odd. I realize I haven't wrote anything for two weeks. It's not really a big deal, I haven't been doing anything covert, I just haven't had much to write about. Well that's not true, I just haven't found the will to do much writing during the past few Mondays. I'm sure the world can deal with the loss.

I thought briefly of saving this post until Monday next week, but I realized if I allowed myself that, I may as well shut this site down because I would never come back and post again. I've just never been much of a journal-writer.

Perhaps I'm going about it the wrong direction. As adding to this medium is a large part for preservation, much like a time capsule (well, for however long blogger.com lasts,) perhaps what I should be doing is relating events of yester-year. I think I'll try this from now on, if I don't have anything to write about in the current time-frame, I'll relate some anecdote from my past. Once I find this task difficult, I will officially close this site.
